A long debated question in the air freshener industry is which scent(s) last the longest.  Well here is the correct answer. First scents are divided into 3 catagories called "notes".  The top note,, note 1 are the most intensed but is the shortest lasting of all the air freshener scents. These are all the citrus scents like orange, lemon, lime and the alike. Next are the note 2 fragrances which include floral and berry scents like gardenia, rose, blackberry and strawberry.  They are smoother smelling but are not as intense as note 1.  However, they last longer than note 1. Finally, note 3 or bottom notes include woody,suede, and foods scents. Includes vanilla, perfumes, and men woody-suede frangrances.  They smell smooth and last the longest. These homemade air fresheners will fill your home with all the fantastic aromas — and cost hardly anything! 1. Keep closets smelling fresh with tea bags. Tie a few black tea bags to your closet rod and they will soak up the musty odors. You can use cinnamon or vanilla black tea to add a subtle fragrance as well! 2. Add essential oils to pine cones. Add one or two drops of your favorite essential oil per pine cone, then set them in a decorative basket. TIP: Bake your pine cones in the oven for 20 minutes at 200 degrees to get rid of any bugs. 3. Make an air freshener with sea salt and citrus rinds. Scoop out the insides of lemons and limes with a knife or spoon, and fill the halves with sea salt. Add cloves or fresh herbs for extra scent, then place anywhere you need bad odors absorbed. 4. Make your own room spray with essential oil, vodka and water. Mix one cup distilled water and 1/2 cup vodka with 10 drops of essential oil and store in a spray bottle. The vodka sanitizes while the essential oil freshens. 1. Apply to the Skin Essential oils are fat soluble, which means they are immediately absorbed by the skin. A popular way to enjoy your essential oils is to simply apply them to your skin for absorption – though never directly on the skin, but always mixed and diluted with a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil or apricot kernel oil. Especially if skin sensitivity is a concern, definitely ALWAYS dilute your essential oil with a common neutral carrier oil (also called base oils) before application. Carrier oils are typically cold-pressed oils and do not evaporate like essential oils do, but they can go rancid where essential oils will not. Your choice of carrier oil will depend a bit on preference of smell, texture, and sensitivities to avoid allergic reactions. Popular choices for carrier oils are coconut oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, sunflower oil or grape seed oil. Popular areas of applying essential oils to your skin are on your wrists, your temples, your feet, or behind your ears. 2. Simply Inhale smelling essential oils Enjoy your essential oils by quickly getting a sniff of your favorite scent anytime during the day! You may choose to carefully inhale your essential oils. Open the bottle of essential oils, hold it up against your nose or place a few drops on a tissue, and take a deep breath to inhale and enjoy. When using a new essential oil for the first time, only use one drop to make sure you don’t have a reaction or sensitivity to the oil. Attempt to keep your breath relaxed as you inhale. Notice if it gets caught in the body or if it flows in and out with ease. A deep breath isn’t a sniff. If you practice slow, deep breaths, your body will send signals to your mind that it needs to relax – and your entire body will follow. Your body and mind aren’t separate things, and sometimes tricking the body to relax first, is going go put the mind in a position to achieve relaxation as well. You know breathing is vital to keeping you alive. Deep breathing, when it’s simple, natural, and necessary, may have a beneficial influence on the health and well being. It is one of the easiest and most effective ways to calm down and regain composure when you are feeling anxious. Deep belly breathing is the secret. And if you add aromatherapy by way of essential oils, such breathing will help to harmonize our nervous system and lessen the quantity of stress in our lives. 3. Steam Inhalation how to use essential oils with steam inhalation Steam inhalation is awesome to use with both relaxing or energizing oils, depending on your mood and needs. Boil 2-3 cups of water, pour it into a bowl and add 2-5 drops of oil to the water. Place your nose about 12” away from the bowl, cover your head and bowl with a towel, and slowly inhale the steam. Using either energizing or relaxing essential oils can make this method useful any time of the day or night. If you notice any discomfort or irritation, stop immediately. Steam inhalation can be quite effective if it’s used with care. It can be beneficial for your skin as well. It is a very powerful and useful therapy for our health. Actually, it is one of the best and safe solutions to treat symptoms of the common flu and cold. It is the perfect way of clearing up sinuses. Chest congestion, cold and flu are a few of the common respiratory problems especially whenever the weather changes. A “head cold” is essentially a common cold which impacts the nasal passages. If you enjoy your steam inhalation bowl and notice the steam disappearing or getting cooler, add more hot water and a couple more drops of the herbal oil as needed, since the water will get diluted. 4. Use an Essential Oil Diffuser Electronic diffusers are designed to disperse a super fine mist of essential oils. They will gently fill the air with the aroma and healing benefits of the essential oil of your choice within minutes. Put a few drops of essential oils in your diffuser, turn it on, and circulate the oil into your room. Diffusing vs. Candle-Burning Essential oils are “volatile”, simply meaning that they easily evaporate at normal temperatures and break down molecularly when exposed to heat. The method of candle-burning to diffuse essential oils is therefore not recommended, as you can be destroying important health benefits of the essential oil with the heat of the candle. Also remember that essential oils are flammable, making the electronic diffusing method safer and more versatile to use. You can plug-in an electronic diffuser anywhere in your home or office, without the need to carefully watch the flame, or needing to have a window open so that you have enough oxygen in the room to feed the candle flame. 5. Use In A Bath bath with essential oils  Adding essential oils to your bath is an amazing way to take a relaxing time-out during your busy day. Buy a box of simple Epsom salts as the base for your essential oils. If you just drop the oils into the water, they will not dissolve as nicely as they do when first mixed into the salts, who then dissolve beautifully. Please don’t combine any other chemically produced soaps or products into this mix in an effort to fully enjoy all the benefits of the essential oil and Epsom salts alone. Baths have existed for centuries. Hot baths enhance the blood flow inside your body and enable the blood vessels to operate better. If you should, build as much as a hotter bath above a week or so to let your body become accustomed to the warmer temperatures. A candle-lit aromatherapy bath can help you relax and enjoy your beautiful home. It’s a sure-fire way to carve out some “me” time at the end (or beginning?) of your busy day. 6. Aromatherapy Massage start using essential oils Essential oils are too concentrated and strong to use for massage by themselves, so you need to mix them in with neutral-smelling carrier oils such as sweet almond oil or grape seed oil. Add up to 20 drops of essential oil to 1 ounce of carrier oil. Wondering how to best start with an essential oil massage, and which oils to use? Massage usually works on all big muscle groups within the body. It is extremely important to remember that if giving (or getting) a massage, the strokes should always go towards the heart. If not, you are not going to receive the full advantages of the massage. Why More is Not Better Remember, essential oils are \ heavily concentrated plant extracts. As an example, one drop of pure peppermint essential oil equals the strength of 28 cups of peppermint tea! Even though this might not seem like a lot, a drop or two is often plenty enough. I have received a lot of questions pertaining to where should I place my air fresheners in the home for the best results, that is, to maximize the smell's aroma. The main three factors that will answer this question is the size of the room in your house, wind drafts, and the type of the air freshener be it a warmer, diffuser, scent packs or other devices. These three general rules will hold true for all dwellings whether brick, wood or block cement. Below I will address each factor. Although it may be obvious that the size of the room in your home matters when placing air fresheners throughout the house, many people over-look this factor simply because the are primarily looking for air freshener design features or some other attribute of the warmer or diffuser. Below is a quick reference to the size of room and it's corresponding size of warmer or diffuser to use: * 100 square foot room or less: 100 ml. diffuser or 1 cube wax warmer * 101 to 400 square foot room: 300 ml. diffuser or 2 cube wax warmer * 401 to 600 square foot room: 500 ml diffuser or a 3 to 4 cube warmer For room sizes greater than 600 square feet, you may want to purchase a commercial style air freshener system. A note about essential oils. When looking for great smells in your home choose essential oil blends rather than pure essential oils. Essential oil blends tend to infuse more fragrance for smooth scents throughout the home, and come in a large variety of blended fruits and herbs. Next, room drafts are a major player in how well an air freshener will "throw'" it's fragrance throughout a room. Rather the wind draft is hot or cold does not matter. Drafts tend to displace or move the scent out of the room through the nearest exit. Hence, try not to locate your air freshener near doors or windows, and do not locate them near air conditioner or heating vents. There are fragrance systems made for use with central air and heating units. Likewise, do not locate your warmer of diffuser near oscillating fans or ceiling fans. They will also scatter the smell from your air freshener away from the place where fresh aroma is needed. I want to mention a note here about typical hallways. A lot of hallways tend to be long and narrower than rooms in your home, therefore, through personal research, I have found it better to use a table-top warmer of diffuser instead of a plugin if possible. If not, use a medium size wax plugin warmer or a medium sized diffuser. 2 cubes or 100-300 ml respectively. Since the tabletop warmer or diffuser is located down low in the hallway, the heat from the air freshener will rise thus filling the air in it's wake with great smelling scent. This method takes advantage of one of the basic laws of physics which states that air tends to rise from an area of high pressure below to a lower pressure above. Although all of the above mentioned type of air freshener products do a great job of making your house smell really good, some types have a greater "throw" than others.  "Throw" is the ability of the air freshener unit to push out it's scent into the room space.  Wax warmers perform this job well.  Maybe not with the greatest  throw, but you get more "bang for your buck".  They do a good job of throw and are cheaper than diffusers and fan-forced air fresheners.  Next are diffusers.  They do a great job of throwing the scent into the room but are a bit higher priced than wax warmers.  Lastly, fan-forced air fresheners do a fantastic job of spreading your fragrance over the room.  They are not as expensive as diffusers, but are more pricier than most wax warmers.  Also they are relative new to the scene as of this writing.  Thus, there is limited research on the usage and performance of this type of units.  All of the above are quality style air fresheners and you will be really pleased at each of their performance.
